How To Lighten Dark Underarms

There are a number of reasons why our underarms turn dark. Everything on our body should be bright including our underarms. It shouldn’t be embarrassing to raise your arms up when you wear a sleeveless shirt or top. You can’t even be free in your favorite strapless dress. The underarms may have gone dark due to the chemicals in our deodorant and hair shaving cream. Saving, sweating and even a medical condition can make the underarms dark. Online, there are so many homemade recipes to lighten the underarm, not all works.

One thing I have come to know about organic homemade beauty recipes is that they don’t work for everyone and it will hardly do you any damage to try them out. These recipes need your effort, time as well as patience but you are sure to get your underarms back to normal. Here are a few proven remedies to help you get lighter underarms. Before you try any of these recipes, please exfoliate your underarms with a gentle cleanser and wash cloth. Just be sure not to apply too much pressure or rubbing as it may exacerbate the situation.

1. Lemon

Lemon is an effective way to lighten anything dark on your skin. Lemon also has anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties.  Its acidic properties help extensively in lightening your skin along with exfoliating dead skin cells. The downside to this is, lemon can make your skin dry, and also because of the acidic properties, it may cause Phytophoto dermatitis a skin condition that occurs when an individual develops a painful burn. To avoid this, use lemon at night, as you are less likely to have this, and also moisturize after using lemon.

Take a slice of lemon and use it to rub your underarms daily before you have your bath at night. You can also add a little bit of turmeric powder to lemon juice and leave for about 10 minutes. Then wash it off with water.

2. Honey

Honey can also help to lighten dark. Apply honey on your underarm for about 20 minutes before washing it off. You can also mix lemon juice with honey to lighten your underarms.

3. Potatoes

Potato is a natural bleaching agent and it’s perfect for those with sensitive skin as compared to lemon. Potatoes, due to their mild acids do not irritate the skin. You can either use potato juice or you can slice a potato and rub on your underarms for about 10 minutes.

4. Cucumbers

Just like potato and lemon, cucumber also has bleaching properties. Cucumber provides the cooling effect when combined with lemon juice to bleach underarms.  You can simply use the cucumber slice or juice and apply on your underarms. You can also mix cucumber juice with lemon juice and a pinch of turmeric, mix all to make a paste. Apply this for about 15 minutes before washing. Do this every night till you see changes.

5. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can help treat and also prevent dark underarms because of its moisturizing properties. Moisturize the area twice a day with aloe Vera.

6. Exfoliate with natural scrubs

a. Sugar – Exfoliate your underarm with a mixture of Mix a cup of brown sugar with 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil. Try the mixture twice a week before your bath.

b. Baking soda – Make a thick paste of baking soda and water. Apply the mix to your underarms and scrub. You can also mix baking soda with rose water.

c. Orange peels

Peel an orange and put the peels out in the sun to dry. Grind the dry orange peels into a powder and mix with milk. Use the mixture to exfoliate your underarms.

7. Coconut oil

Use coconut oil daily or every other day to lighten your underarms. The beauty of this is that coconut oil is a natural moisturiser and deodorant. So you get to kill 3 birds with one stone. The Vitamin E in coconut oil can help lighten dark skin over time; it’s advisable you use it every day for fast results. You can also massage the oil into the skin for 10-15 minutes before washing it off, that’s if you don’t want to wear coconut oil for the whole day.

8. Vinegar

Mix vinegar and rice flour to form a paste. Take a hot shower (not too hot) and then apply the past to the underarms and let it dry for 15 minutes then rinse with warm water. This will give you a lighter, germ-free, sweet smelling skin.

9. Skip shaving and harmful deodorants

Skip shaving and try waxing. You should also stop using hair removal creams. You should also use moisturizing deodorants that will help you maintain smooth and healthy armpits.

10 Visit your doctor

If any of the home remedies don’t work, you should visit your doctor. You may be suffering from the medical condition called acanthosis nigricans. This may be the cause of your dark underarms and this cannot be cured with home remedies.
